PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
eTrain: Dormant Accounts & Escheat Procedures

This program is intended especially for California credit unions.
Every fall, your California credit union must report inactive accounts and their unclaimed funds to the state and remit remaining funds the next summer.

Do you know the rules?
Join credit union compliance expert Mary-Lou Heighes for this basic look at the regulations, procedures, and forms that govern dormant accounts and the state of California’s right to escheat, or take, those unclaimed accounts.

Get answers to these questions:

  • How long must you hold an inactive account before escheating it to the state?
  • What is the difference between the Notice Report and the Remit Report?
  • What constitutes a “reasonable effort” to locate a member before you escheat his funds to the state?
  • What is the absolute deadline to send a notice of escheat?
  • What is the maximum locator fee you may charge the member?
  • What should you do if a member comes in to claim his account after his funds have been escheated to the state?
