eTrain: New Federal Rules for Garnishments & Federal Benefit Payments

The U. S. Treasury issues federal benefit payments to citizens every year. Many of these payments are necessary to provide for the basic needs of retirees, and children and spouses of decedents. Other payments are for those with physical or other types of impairments that would make earning a living difficult or impossible.

Since a garnishment or levy on these payments can leave these people without any means of support, the Treasury has moved to provide protections for some of that income.

In this program, credit union compliance expert Mary-Lou Heighes will update you on these new rules. You will learn:

  • The types of payments to which this rule applies
  • They type(s) of garnishments not subject to the rule
  • How the calculation of exempt funds is handled

This webinar is designed only to address the new federal rule. Existing state laws may still be relevant as well.

Who Should Attend?
Credit union professionals who process or oversee garnishment orders, especially in these positions:

  • Collections
  • Operations
  • Compliance
  • Internal Auditor
  • Member Service
