eTrain: The Outlook for the Economy & Its Implications for Credit Unions
Presented by Bill Hampel, Senior Vice President of Research & Policy Analysis and Chief Economist, Credit Union National Association (CUNA)
Will 2012 be the year we dig out of our economic hole? According to CUNA Chief Economist Bill Hampel, the economy "is moving in the right direction but the hole we were in was so deep it's going to take us a while to get to the end of it."
What does this mean for credit unions in 2012 and beyond? Join Mr. Hampel in this forecast on the economy and how it will affect your members’ saving and borrowing behaviors, your credit union’s operations, and your plans for your credit union’s future.
Mr. Hampel will discuss:
- The outlook for the national economy through this year and into next year
- Prospects for employment, inflation and interest rates
- The implications for loan and savings growth at credit unions
- Improvements in credit union credit quality
- Corporate stabilization assessments
- Credit union earnings
- The challenges that still remain ahead
Meet the presenter, Bill Hampel:
Bill Hampel is the senior vice president of research and policy analysis and chief economist for the Credit Union National Association (CUNA).
The research and policy analysis department performs market research for credit unions and state credit union leagues, maintains a comprehensive financial database on credit unions, and conducts a variety of research on financial and economic issues of interest to the credit union movement. He joined the department as an economist in 1978 and was promoted to vice president in 1985. He was appointed senior vice president in 1992.
Additionally, Hampel writes economic analysis columns that appear in several credit union publications. An expert on the economy and credit union issues, he is regularly interviewed by the media for stories appearing on national news outlets.
Prior to joining CUNA, Hampel was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Montana at Missoula, and before that was an instructor of economics at Iowa State University at Ames. Hampel served as a staff member at Navy Federal Credit Union in Virginia during a one-year sabbatical in 1989, where he studied credit union operations and carried out a variety of consulting projects.
He was on the board of directors for Great Wisconsin Credit Union (formerly CUNA Credit Union) from 1991 to 2003, serving as board chair from 1999 to 2001. He currently serves on the board of the National Cooperative Bank, which supports America's cooperatives and their members, especially in low-income communities, by providing innovative financial and related services.
